I took a random picture of the sky one day at a museum after thinking about Tacita Dean. No intention of this being considered art.

Tracey Tracey Tracey I needed your more love
2015

Isolated in artist residency, utterly heart broken, nobody to talk to for weeks. I had an accidental encounter with this piece of art while at a party I probably didn't warrant being at: The mayor of Sydney's mansion. It was stuffy and awkward and I mostly drank by myself looking at the ocean on the back patio. I saw this pink glow behind the heads of the elite party goers and it was Tracey. More Love. It struck me so hard that it surprised me. Years later while working at a museum in a book store, my colleague put the only Tracey Emin book we had on display with 100 other books. The book on her neons. That book had never been displayed before. She walked in the store and I noticed it was Tracey while she was being assisted by my colleague. I tried desperately not to say anything but before she left, I told her I have thought about her and her work for many years and the story mentioned above. She said she was on her way to Australia at that moment-heading to LAX to visit the woman at the house where that piece I saw lives and that her husband became Prime Minister. She said, I her thought people in LA didn't like my work. Validated by our display, she took a picture of the book. I told her I loved her work. I grabbed the book and had her sign it for my collection.

The De Young Museum decided that they would do an "open call" for submissions by Bay Area artists as a re-opening exhibition of the institution amid the Corona virus pandemic. Congruently Black Lives Matter and the people have been protesting the injustices of institutional racism within the police forces in the United States. Defund The Police is a mantra among the streets and social media during this difficult time. I'm from the Bay Area and now live in Los Angeles, thus being disqualified from doing the submission.

Palm Frond Fragments for Paul and Mitzi
2015

I found these palm fronds on a lawn in front of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. I couldn't determine whether or not they fell naturally or had been cut. I decided to take action. I think the pieces subconsciously look like the tombstones on Paul Chan's keyboard that was on display. It's also notable that I must have thought of Mitzi Pederson. I've had a crush on her for years and this was a bad way of expressing it. I didn't do it on purpose.

fun, lower case f.

fun, lower case f. was a visual play to keep me happy while making a book by hand and fighting depression. It's akin to the Duchamp bicycle wheel and was not considered art but a mere distraction while working. It blew.

I completely wasted this photograph I took by creating an Instagram account and posting it as the first entry. It is still my most liked image but a huge failure. It related to something much more elusive at the time and I completely deflated it's value.

Michael Deane Plant

I had nobody to talk with while in residency at Artspace and completely heart broken over the loss of a girlfriend at the time. The Australians didn't seem to care that I was there, despite walking in public for 5 hours a day and going to pubs. Michael Deane Plant kept an eye on me while I worked on stuff relating to art and life.
I never considered this art but it was comforting and made me have hope.
Michael Deane is a great artist.
